Oppo- I’m getting prepped to renovate part of my basement and make an officr and bath need a compressor for the framing nailer that would also handle some work in the garage. What are your recommendations?

Depends on how often you need to use it. Something like ^ this would certainly work but it would run alot.

Something like this below wouldn;t run as much but might be more than you need if you are on a budget

For the love of God, do NOT get oil less. You can hear them from space!

I’m not going to give you any specific recommendations, but here are the important things to consider. Pick your nail gun first, and see how many CFM of air it needs at 90psi. Then find a compressor that makes at least that much, and prefferably more CFM.

Other considerations: the bigger the tank, the less often it will run. Oiled compressors are WAY quieter than oilless ones. Don’t be fooled by air compressors bragging about how much pressure they can make, volume of air (as measured by CFM@90psi) is what really matters.

i would recommend at least a 15 gallon tank if you want to use it in the garage after. 15 gallons are on wheels so easly moved from one place to another, and 15 is enough not for it to run all the time while nailing.

I just did baseboards in my living room with mine, and I think it ran twice total, one time before I started then one more time while i was nailing

If you need something reasonably easy to move around from one room to another, this is my pick https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00SCSBPQA/?coliid=I2VKUCE4II26H5&colid=307GYDMBD64CQ&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

If you go with the 15 gallon plus it will be a pain to move up stairs but I would suggest buying it anyway and just purchasing enough air hose to reach where you work. My father ran 100ft of hose from a garage to his workshop while it was under construction and it works fine. Just takes a little while longer to pump up initially due to the added volume of all the hose.

Buy the biggest oiled compressor with a belt drive you can fit/afford. Then you can run as much hose as you need from the garage to the basement.

Or get a small one and just know that you will be annoyed. Don’t buy one from Harbor Freight because it will make you feel like you are being punished.

To run an impact driver you will want something on the order of 7 cfm and like 30 gallons or it is a struggle.

Buy as big as you can afford and fit in the garage. And yeah, the CFMs are what count. If you ever think you might spray paint or sandblast, you need a big compressor, but if you’re just looking to use a nail gun and such, a smaller compressor that meet the specs of the nail gun will do fine.

Thanks everyone! I should have given more info. I’d like to spend around 500, and would use it mostly for fence/home reno and airtools in the garage.

I already went the HF route on a small one (cost me 20ish on sale) for tire fill ups and i feel like its going to take off everytime it starts up

I have a big one that a guy gave me for $40 after his wife told him it was too loud for their garage. Not only does it make more noise than should be possible, it sucks in all other ways as well. Though it will hold air for a long time.
